Hanging around on the streets of Tokyo with an original 964 Carrera Cup car.

Built in 1990, only fifty 964s were prepared for use in the inaugural season of the Carrera Cup, Porsche’s own one-make series comprised entirely of production-derived cars. This particular chassis, number 45, made its way over to Japan some 30 plus years ago and is now a weekend regular around Tokyo.

From afar, the Cup very much resembles its road-going siblings, but it’s once you get up close the changes are quite notable. The colour matched roll cage and stripped interior is immediately in your face, wrapped around a pair of Porsche branded fixed Recaro’s and six-point harnesses.

But what you cannot see is the 200kg weight saving. We’re talking an almost 13% cut on the road going car. This paired with a 15bhp bump on standard Carrera 2 figures, a shortened third, fourth and fifth gear, and an LSD, meant the Cup car was by no means a slouch.

Owner Kotaro-san notes, “My car is styled to resemble the vehicles that competed in the European 964 Super CUP series. The mirrors and wheels are Super CUP spec, however everything else remains in original condition.”
