Up close with the legendary homologation special from the transaxle era.

“This car has been with me for more than half my life. Every time I take it for a spin, it feels like something special to me.”

It’s not everyday you meet someone who gets to say they had a Carrera GT as their first car. Sebastian is one of the lucky few, even if the lesser known 924 variant isn’t necessarily what comes to mind when you hear the name.

Just 406 were built as a homologation special, turning the 924 into a lightweight racer and proving the high-performance potential of the transaxle platform. Sebastian has had his for so long that it’s closer to a member of the family than another car in the collection.

“It was my first true love on four wheels. Back then I knew it was no ordinary Porsche, but over the years I’ve truly come to understand how special this car really is.

Among the many things I appreciate about it is its appearance. The fender flares, the hood scoop, the distinctive silhouette. The handling is also remarkably good for a car from 1981. I bought it originally from an elderly man in Belgium, who supposedly bought it brand new. The car had 26,400km on it, and it now has 54,800km.

I haven’t driven it all the time, there were periods of my life when other things became more important like work or family. Throughout those years the Carrera GT often sat patiently under a cover. Every time I returned to it however, the feeling immediately came back.

Once, after many years of barely driving it, I started the car early one summer morning. I had the roads to myself, and the air was still cool. The engine sounded raw and honest, exactly as a Carrera GT should. Everything came back at once: the memories of my first car, younger years, dreams, and freedom”.
