Benito’s “Ice Cream” 996 is the perfect car to escape down Mallorca’s famously beautiful roads.

We started early in the Tramuntana mountain range, a fishing rod in the car and no real plan beyond making our way down to the water.

Benito Rodriguez’s 996 had just come back in what he calls “ice cream”, a warm beige running almost uninterrupted from bodywork to wheels, with just a flash of green in the brake callipers to shake up the theme. Cars and fishing have always occupied a similar space for him. Both are an excuse to disappear for a while, to get out of the routine, and out of phone reception.

Drive until something looks good. Stop, throw a line, stay for a bit, pack up and keep moving.

From the mountains to the harbour, that pretty much described the whole day. It was never really about catching a fish anyway.

Cars and fishing have always occupied a similar space for him. Both are an excuse to disappear for a while.
