Howard Kay tells us all about importing a vintage Porsche to use on his wedding day.

Howard Kay wasn’t especially committed to importing a euro spec 924 at first. After all, most don’t think it’s worth the trouble of finding and shipping European spec 924 vs just settling for one of the readily available US market cars. That’s until he spotted this car for sale in Italy, in Lhasa Green Metallic with an original Pascha interior.

“I immediately fell in love. I bought it last October, and my wife and I decided we needed to use it as our wedding car in April. Before it was shipped over, I had a broker help me get some work done on the car, which ended up taking until February through a series of comical mishaps (like ordering new injectors but only getting 3 out of 4 that were actually the correct type).

This was cutting it extremely close, the car’s journey across the ocean was a nail biter, an extra worry on top of everything else that comes with wedding planning. Through a lot of luck and expedited shipping fees, the car arrived in the middle of the night 3 days before our wedding!

"Our wedding was the best day ever, and after the ceremony, we gathered all of our favourite people around the car for our sendoff."

That’s not where it ends though, because I still needed to learn how to drive it. Whoops! I knew the basics, and my (then future) father-in-law is a seasoned manual driver who took me out for some lessons.

Our wedding was the best day ever, and after the ceremony, we gathered all of our favourite people around the car for our sendoff. My wife wrote ‘Just Married’ on the big glass hatch and we drove off to a big cheer!

In the end the aches, anxieties, and extra effort of importing a 924 were totally worth it to have it be part of our big day, and I’m really excited to be the car’s next caretaker. I’ve since spent time working on it, driving it, taking it to local meetups and going on shoots. Going through the gears and hearing the engine over my favourite cassettes puts a big smile on my face.”
