Same Car, Different Decade

Micheal’s 911 Turbo is a perfect tribute to the car that started the obsession in the first place.

Good cars are those you remember for their performance, but the best cars are remembered for what they made you feel.

For Michael, that was an Ocean Blue 993. More than 25 years ago, he had the chance to drive this very car, and the experience stayed with him. The smell of the cabin, the feel of the wheel, the blue leather, and the matching paint. He promised himself that someday he would own something like it himself.

Since then, Michael owned more than 20 911s, including two 993 Turbos, and yet the memory of that Ocean Blue car persisted. So when he was offered an allocation for a brand new Turbo 50, he knew exactly how he wanted it.

After taking delivery of his Turbo, Michael’s son John went searching for the original 993 that inspired it. The car had changed hands through a few different provinces over the years but remarkably, it had landed back in Toronto. The dealership that had most recently sold the car had pointed John to the car’s current owner Landon, and from there they arranged the rendezvous.

Landon had become just as obsessed with the car as Michael had. “I fell in love with it,” he says. “The colour, the widebody, the stance. There’s a sense that you’re operating a machine rather than a very sophisticated computer. The 993 also gives me permission to tinker, there’s always something to do so you become its caretaker as much as its owner.

Michael had been through the same with his previous 993s, but his experience was more complicated. He used them as daily drivers, but eventually found himself worrying more about preserving them than enjoying them. “I agonised over every kilometre, I knew what they’d eventually become,” he says.

That tension between preservation and enjoyment sits at the heart of these two cars. Landon’s car represents the best of what Porsche was, and Michael’s car demonstrates what they’ve become. Parked side by side in their matching colours, they so clearly belong to the same story.
